شاخه زبان های ایرانی در گروه زبان های هند وایرانی (آریایی) وخانواده زبان های هند واروپایی جای دارد دیگر گروه های این خانواده ژرمنی، یونانی، ایتالیایی، ارمنی، آناتولیایی، آلبانیایی، بالتی، اسلاوی، تخاری و سلتی می باشد باید توجه داشت که نباید واژه آریایی رابرای همه زبان های خانواده هند واروپایی به کاربرد این اشتباه دانشمندان انگلیسی در اوایل سده بیستم بوده است امروزه تنها زبان های هند وایرانی، آریایی نامیده می شوند.
زبان های ایرانی را در سه دوره زمانی بررسی می کنند 1- دوره باستانی(از ورود آریایی ها تا نابودی امپراتوری هخامنشی) 2- دوره میانه(از نابودی هخامنشیان تا آغاز پادشاهی صفاریان) و3- دوره نو که از صفاریان تا امروز.
1- زبان های ایرانی در دوره باستان :
ریشه همه زبان های ایرانی، زبانی به نام ایرانی باستان است از این زبان حتی یک کلمه هم باقی نمانده از زبان ایرانی باستان چهار زبان مستقیما پدید آمده به نام های سکایی، مادی، فارسی باستان و اوستایی
1- زبان سکایی: سکاها قومی آریایی بودن که از هزاره اول پیش از میلاد تا هزاره اول پس از میلاد در سرزمین بزرگی از کناره های دریای سیاه تا مرزهای چین زندگی می کردند از این زبان جز شماری واژه چیزی برجای نمانده ونوشته ای از این زبان به دست نیامده است برخی از واژگان سکایی که باقی مانده : aspa: اسب ،hapta: هفت و... .
2-زبان مادی: زبان قوم ماد بوده که از این زبان نیز جز چند واژه در نوشته های پارسی باستان چیزی باقی نمانده و نوشته ای از این زبان به دست نیامده برخی واژگان باقی مانده : wazarka: بزرگ ، asan: سنگ و... .
3- زبان پارسی باستان: زبان قوم پارس بوده و زبان کتیبه های شاهان هخامنشی است قدیمیترین و مهمترین اثر باز مانده از این زبان کتیبه بیستون است.
4- زبان اوستایی: این زبان زبان یکی از نواحی شرق ایران بوده تنها اثر بجا مانده از این زبان کتاب اوستا است و کهن ترین نوشته ای که از این زبان باقی مانده گاتاهای زرتشت است.
در دوره میانی زبان های ایرانی به سبب شباهت هایی که از نظر دستوری دارند به دو گروه تقسیم شده اند 1- گروه ایرانی میانه شرقی و 2- گروه ایرانی میانه غربی
الف - گروه ایرانی میانه شرقی :
این گروه شامل زبان های بلخی ، سکایی ، سغدی و خوارزمی است.
1- زبان بلخی: زبان قدیم بلخ است و تا سال 1957 اثری از آن در دست نبود تا آن که باستان شناسان فرانسوی توانستند کتیبه ای در سرخ کتل (میان بلخ و بدخشان) به دست آورند پس از آن در کتیبه های دیگری نیز از این زبان به دست آمد از این زبان در وره باستان وجدید اثری به دست نیامده است
2- زبان سکایی : از زبان سکایی در دوره میانه نیز آثار زیادی به دست آمده است به این زبان مهم آریایی تا سده یازدهم میلادی در کاشغر و حوالی آن سخن گفته می شده و پس از آن با هجوم ترکان جای خود را به ترکی داد گویش های پامیری بازمانده های زبان سکایی هستند.
3- زبان سغدی : زبان سرزمین سغد و شهر مهم آن بخارا بوده است از این زبان در دوره باستان اثری در دست نیست اما آثار زیادی از آن در دوره میانه به دست آمده است. زبان سغدی در سده چهارم جای خود را به پارسی داد امروزه زبان یغنابی که در دره یغناب رواج دارد بازمانده این زبان می باشد.
4 - زبان خوارزمی: زبان قدیم خوارزم بوده است که تا زمان مغول در خوارزم رواج داشت و پس از آن جای خود را به زبان ازبکی داد. (خوارزم به احتمال بسیار زیاد خواستگاه نخستین آریایی ها بوده است)
ب – گروه ایرانی میانه غربی :
این گروه زبان پارسی میانه و زبان پهلوی اشکانی را دربر می گیرد.
1- زبان پهلوی اشکانی : از این زبان در دوره باستان اثری باقی نمانده اما از دوره میانه آثار مهمی باقی مانده که مهمترین آنها کتیبه اردوان پنجم در شهر شوش ، کتیبه های پادشاهان نخستین ساسانی و دو کتاب یادگار زریران و درخت آسوریک است
2- زبان پارسی میانه : این زبان دنباله پارسی باستان است و در دوره ساسانی زبان رسمی ایران بوده است به این زبان پهلوی ساسانی هم گفته می شود از این زبان در دوره میانه چهار نوع اثر به چهار الفبای مختلف به جا مانده است کتیبه های شاهان و مردان مهم دوره ساسانی ، زبور پهلوی ، آثار زردشتیان وآثار مانویان .
دوره زبان های ایرانی نو از سال 254 هجری آغاز می شود و در این دوره زبان های گوناگونی رواج یافت که بسیاری همچنان زنده هستند.
1- زبان پشتو : این زبان از زبان های ایرانی شرقی به شمار می رود و امروزه در شمال پاکستان و شرق افغانستان رواج دارد کهن ترین اثر از این زبان به سده شانزدهم میلادی بر می گردد. این زبان دو گویش دارد گویش جنوبی که ((ش)) و ((ژ)) باستانی را حفظ نموده است و گویش شمالی که در آن ((ژ)) به ((غ)) و ((ش)) به خ تبدیل شده است . الفبای این زبان فارسی و واژگان آن زیر نفوذ فارسی ، هندی و عربی است از این زبان در دوران باستان و میانه اثری بر جای نمانده است.
2- زبان های کردی : زبان های کردی از زبان های ایرانی غربی هستند که در کردستان بزرگ ( شامل کردستان ایران ، ترکیه ،عراق ،ارمنستان و سوریه ) و برخی ناحیه های کرد نشین پراکنده مانند شمال خراسان و شمال کابل و... رواج دارند. در ایران و عراق کردی با الفبای فارسی نوشته می شود در ارمنستان با الفبای روسی و در سوریه با الفبای لاتین نوشته می شود. کردی زیر تاثیر واژگانی شدید زبان های فارسی و عربی و اندکی نیز ترکی و روسی قرار گرفته است. از زبان های کردی در دوه های باستان و میانه اثری بر جای نمانده است.(درباره زبان کردی و فرهنگ و تمدن ایرانی قوم ستمدیده ، مقاوم و دلاور کرد مطلبی در دست تهیه دارم که به زودی به این عزیزان تقدیم خواهم کرد)
3- زبان بلوچی: این زبان از زبان های ایرانی غربی است و در بلوچستان بزرگ (گسترده در ایران ، پاکستان و افغانستان) رایج است.
4- زبان آسی : این زبان از زبان های ایرانی شرقی است و بازمانده زبان سکاهای غرب است . این زبان تنها زبان ایرانی جدید است که از زبان فارسی تاثیر نپذیرفته است .
5- زبان فارسی: این زبان دنباله زبان پارسی میانه است که در دوره نو گسترشی شگفت یافت و از عثمانی تا هند و فرارودان گسترش یافت . اما با به قدرت رسیدن صفویه در ایران با این زبان در فرارودان و عثمانی مبارزه شد و با ظهور استعمار انگلیس در هند نیز زبان فارسی تارومار شد و از رواج آن بسیار کاسته شد.
رواج زبان فارسی در هند سبب پدید آمدن زبانی شد که به آن اردو می گویند و زبان رسمی پاکستان است. همچنین زبان دیگری به نام هندوستانی نیز پدید آمد.
شاخه ای از زبان فارسی به نام آذری در دوره اسلامی در آذربایجان رواج داشت که به تدریج به دلیل سلطه دیرپای اقوام ترک نژاد تا اواسط دوره صفویه جای خود را به زبان (ترکی آذری) داد این زبان نو بر مبنای زبان های فارسی و آذری باضافه فر نهاد های دستوری ترکی و مقدار کمی واژگان ترکی پدید آمده است . سهم واژگان ترکی در این زبان با فعل ها و رابطه ها نزدیک به بیست تا سی درصد است و بقیه این زبان را واژگان آذری ، فارسی و عربی تشکیل می دهد. البته گویش آذری همچنان در برخی نقاط آذربایجان به صورت پراکنده رواج دارد.
